Rey Fortea, Counseling Intern

Counseling Intern

Supervised by Claudia Thompson, LMFT-S, LPC-S

Most people Rey works with want two things that can seem at odds: deep connection and room to remain fully themselves. They may feel caught in the same arguments, unsure how to ask for what they need, or tired of understanding their patterns without understanding how to change them. Rey works with individuals and couples ready to turn self-understanding into practical movement toward a meaningful life, however they define it.

Beginning therapy can be intimidating. You may wonder whether it will be worth the time and money, whether facing the truth will feel like too much, or whether you are ready for change. Those questions are welcome. Therapy is not something that happens to you; you remain in charge of its direction and pace.

Rey’s role is to create a steady, collaborative space where you can speak honestly and develop solutions that fit your life. Over time, Rey hopes that space becomes something you carry within yourself. As you understand yourself deeply, you can show up more authentically with yourself and the people you care about.

Rey sees clients as coworkers, not patients. His training gives him useful maps, but you know your life’s terrain. Rey does not sit across from you with answers or advice. We bring what each of us knows into the room and work together on life’s trickiest questions. Rey believes people can grow, especially when they feel safe enough to be honest and supported enough to try something new.

The heart of counseling is courage. Looking at something for the first time or seeing an old story from a new angle is necessary and can be frightening. That may mean loosening habits that once protected you but no longer serve you. It can stir up grief and anger, or it might bring up that uneasy feeling that changing your mind means you were “wrong.” Therapy gives those reactions room without letting them run the show.

Rey’s path to becoming a therapist was not clear. Rey worked as a hedge-fund recruiter and pursued graduate study in artificial intelligence before entering counseling. Rey brings analytical rigor into emotional work, because careful thinking can help us find steadier ground. Rey, like his clients, is on life’s turbulent path, too, and remains humbled by our capacity to adapt and grow.

Approach to Counseling

Sessions with Rey are warm and active. You'll begin with what feels most alive for you and slow it down enough to understand what is beneath the surface. You may notice how a thought shapes a feeling, how that feeling influences an action, and how the cycle repeats and relates to the core beliefs you have about yourself. Insight matters, but you will also find small, realistic ways to interrupt the cycle in daily life.

Rey draws from approaches that help people make room for difficult emotions while choosing actions that reflect what matters most. The goal is to build the freedom to move toward your values even while discomfort comes along.

With couples, Rey uses practical tools informed by the Gottman Method to transform conflict into connection. You may practice listening without preparing a defense, asking clearer questions, repairing after hurt, and becoming curious about each other’s inner worlds. Whether Rey works with an individual or a couple, sessions balance reflection with action. You may leave with a new perspective or a small experiment. The aim is lasting change that feels like your own.
