Maria Mohamed

Counseling Intern

Supervised by Jill Baumgarner, LPC

Maria works with both couples and individuals seeking to foster fulfilling and meaningful relationships. People need a sense of connection to thrive and to grow, but when they become stuck in painful relationship patterns or in the ripples of trauma, they can be left feeling alone. Maria supports her clients as they explore the blocks to their ability to feel connected and supported.

She gently and compassionately guides her clients into understanding the emotions and needs that motivate their behaviors. With a more profound understanding of their relationship dynamics, clients can begin to open themselves to the vulnerability of reaching for and receiving love and support. For individuals, a richer understanding of their own internal processes can pave the way for self-compassion, growth, and more satisfying relationships.

Ultimately, Maria focuses on strengthening emotional bonds and fostering secure connections, whether as an individual or within a couple. She understands the power of self-exploration in enabling couples and individuals to heal attachment wounds, deepen intimacy, and cultivate fulfilling relationships.

She specializes in working with couples who are recovering from infidelity, experiencing desire discrepancies, or struggling with communication. With individuals, her specialties include exploring attachment wounds, past traumas, and relationship issues.

Maria also offers therapy in Spanish and English.

Approach to Counseling

Maria practices with an emotionally focused approach, which holds that people get stuck in painful interaction cycles. By slowing down our emotional processes, we can gain a deeper understanding of the emotions and motivations behind our cycles. From a place of insight, we are better able to communicate our needs and desires with ourselves and others.

Maria hopes to provide a safe environment for her clients to nurture their connections and personal growth.

Education

Maria has advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT). Throughout graduate school, she has attended a variety of workshops and trainings that have expanded her knowledge and clinical skills. She also regularly attends continuing education events hosted by the Austin counseling community, further promoting her clinical growth and development.
