Shelly Crossland
Licensed Professional Counselor- Associate
Supervised by Claudia Thompson, LMFT-S, LPC-S
Shelly is a trauma-informed sex and relationship therapist who works with individuals and couples. She specializes in helping clients with a trauma history process how this is impacting their ability to be fully present and satisfied in their relationships and sexual experiences today. She is deeply aware of how trauma can impact your life long after the event or after you have left the environment or relationship. She has experience helping clients who have a history of sexual assault, sexual harassment, childhood trauma, emotional abuse, and narcissistic abuse, as well as people who are recovering from past toxic or unhealthy relationships. Shelly believes strongly that healing is possible, and guides her clients through a process of releasing shame and building deeper self-confidence and self-love.
Many of Shelly’s individual clients experience anxiety around intimacy, low libido, low desire, and many of the couples she works with are navigating differences in libido and desire. She works with individuals and couples who are in traditional relationship structures, as well as folks who practice ethical non-monogamy and polyamory. She is an LGBTQIA+-affirming therapist, and works with individuals with all gender identities and sexual orientations. Shelly creates a safe space for folks who are wanting to learn how to show up more authentically in their lives and within their relationships and sexual experiences. Shelly has additional expertise around helping people who are navigating the world with a Neurodivergent brain (ADHD, Autism, OCD), and enjoys helping her clients better understand how their brain works and how it impacts their experiences in relationships and intimacy.
Approach to Counseling
Shelly’s approach offers something deeper than traditional “talk therapy”, especially in her work with clients who have experienced trauma. She utilizes the following theories and modalities in her work: Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment Theory, Polyvagal Theory, Nervous System Regulation. Her goal is to help you connect with your body and emotions first, instead of relying solely on intellectualizing and over-analyzing.

She believes that her own growth and learning are just as important as that of her clients, and she is always reading, listening to podcasts, and doing additional trainings to ensure she is offering the best possible service to those she works with. For clients that find it helpful, she is always ready to offer a book or podcast recommendation, send a worksheet or journal prompt, or give “homework” for them to focus on in between sessions.
Education
Shelly is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Associate with a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University. She also completed a Sex and Relationship Coaching training program with the Somatica Institute.
